A Thanksgiving Story Connected to Christmas (the gift of Jesus)
Social Studies Activities for December 16-18
Watch the Video of the book Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving by Eric Metaxas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbDF5l_qOMI
We are preparing to go on Christmas break. Today’s story is about a man named Squanto. You may have learned about Squanto before as learning about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Today’s story showed you Squanto’s life. He went through some very difficult periods of his life being captured and made a slave, being taken from his home and tribe and brought across the ocean to Europe. Yet the gift of Christmas, Jesus, came into Squanto’s life. Instead of hatred and anger because of the horrible things that happened in his life, his heart was filled with love. In the midst of the hardships of his life he had discovered the greatest gift of all, Jesus, and that resulted in him loving and helping others as Jesus teaches us to do. |
Social Studies can help us develop good character and values to live by to be the person God wants you to be for the community of people you interact with. Your Story (life) and our story is part of God’s Story. The best way to live your part in God’s Story is to line up your life to God’s ways and plans as revealed to us in the Bible, develop the character and values of Jesus into who you are.

Homework - Chapter 5 WS
Week of November 9 - 13
Day 1 - We went over the Key Concepts section of the Chapter 4 Quiz and it was handed in after class. Explanations for the 4 questions are listed below.
Homework - Read pages 97 - 103 to discover how the Spanish are next expanding into New Mexico 40 years after Coronado. Key Concepts Question explanations 1. Estevan's Story and 1st contact with Zuni. Estevan was a Moorish slave and was part of the attempted colony set up in Florida. They abandoned the colony and sailed for New Spain but were shipwrecked onto Texas. Estevan was a survivor. 1 year later Estevan escaped his captors with 3 others. They walked west and south for 7 years eventually finding New Spain. The viceroy (Mendoza) wanted to expand to the North if their was wealth. Mendoza sent Estevan with the small expedition to the north to explore. Estevan was the first to arrive at Hawikuh of Zuni. He sent a large cross back to his leader Marcos signaling he found something of great importance and wealth. However Estevan was ultimately killed by the Zunis. The full reason why he was killed is unknown. Estevan is important because he was the first known westerner to come to Zuni. Marcos claim of the cities of gold would lead to Coronado and a large expedition coming to Zuni and New Mexico in the next year. 2. The Spaniards were motivated to come to the Americas first in search of a trade route to Eastern Europe. This related to Spain's desire to gain wealth which continued to be the primary reason for their colonies in America. They also came to gain land growing Spanish empire. They came to spread Christianity through the Catholic Church. Some came for adventure. 3. "The Muslim Conquest of Spain" map is shown to show how Spain had battled the Islamic Moor Empire from Northern Africa for over 700 years. This effected Spain because the King and Queen did not send Christopher Columbus on his search for the trade route to Eastern Asia until they finally defeated the Moors in southern Spain in 1492. Now they decided to fund Columbus's voyage and he bumped into the "New World" (Americas) rather than arriving in Asia. 4. Columbian Exchange - Watch the Columbian Exchange video - Note the things that came from Europe to the America's and how that affected the Native American people and changed their ways of life. Day 2 - Chapter 5 Section 1 - We went over a powerpoint of the main information. We reviewed the main people from chapter 4 by matching the description of what what was done to the name. As we went over the chapter 5 section 1 we matched the lower part of the worksheet to the people.
Homework - Read about the Pecos Pueblo on page 101 and write 3 interesting facts on the paper for today's lesson. TIMELINES - On the back of the paper, make 2 timelines as described on the paper for today's lesson. |

Week of November 2 - 6
Spanish Come in Contact with Zuni and New Mexico
Read Chapter 4 sections 4 and 5. Read and fill in the blanks to the notes papers. Homework 1. Chapter 4 WS 2. Chapter 4 Quiz Summary - This week we are covering the history of the first interactions of Zuni and the Western world. The Spanish were establishing themselves in the early 1500s in Central America. They heard stories of cities of gold to the North. They first sent a small scouting group up to the North led by Fray Marcos and Estevan. Estevan was the first to reach Zuni, but he was killed. Marcos returned to New Spain claiming to have seen the cities of gold but he really had not. New Spain's leader, called the viceroy, was named Mendoza. He quickly organized a large group to go North led by Coronado. After 6 months they made it to Zuni but did not find cities of Gold. Their weapons and horses overpowered the Zuni. They made peace with Zuni because they really were just interested in wealth and the ideas of cities of gold. Coronado sent scouting groups out in search of the gold. Next they went east to the Pueblos near the Rio Grande River. From there they were tricked by El Turco who told them of gold to the east in the Great Plains. Coronado sought the gold to the east but again was disappointed. Coronado had learned much about the lands of the Southwest but returned to New Spain disappointed because their were no cities of gold. |
