A Thanksgiving Story Connected to Christmas (the gift of Jesus)
Social Studies Activities for December 16-18
Watch the Video of the book Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving by Eric Metaxas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbDF5l_qOMI
We are preparing to go on Christmas break. Today’s story is about a man named Squanto. You may have learned about Squanto before as learning about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Today’s story showed you Squanto’s life. He went through some very difficult periods of his life being captured and made a slave, being taken from his home and tribe and brought across the ocean to Europe. Yet the gift of Christmas, Jesus, came into Squanto’s life. Instead of hatred and anger because of the horrible things that happened in his life, his heart was filled with love. In the midst of the hardships of his life he had discovered the greatest gift of all, Jesus, and that resulted in him loving and helping others as Jesus teaches us to do. |
Social Studies can help us develop good character and values to live by to be the person God wants you to be for the community of people you interact with. Your Story (life) and our story is part of God’s Story. The best way to live your part in God’s Story is to line up your life to God’s ways and plans as revealed to us in the Bible, develop the character and values of Jesus into who you are.

Native Americans Struggle in the West
This week we are looking at the Native Americans in the west as they struggle in the midst of the US westward movement. Their land and territory is being taken across the plains. Treaties were made putting the plains tribes on reservations but the US continued to break the treaties. Some Native Americans resisted the changes and one the battle of Little Bighorn. Eventually the resistance would end because they were outmatched by the military power of the US. We will also look at Native Americans today and attempts to bring reform and improvements to them from the government. Day 1 - We read pages 584-586 in class and filled in the note taking page that went with it. Homework Day 2 - We read pages 587-589 in class and finish the note taking WS. We also discussed God's Story in relation to the Native Americans. See the text below. Homework: Native American Struggle to Survive Questions WS |
Question: God's Story - Why did God allow the advancing United States nation to do terrible things to Native Americans, force them onto reservations, and their way of life to be taken away?
I do not have a clear answer. What I can say is that God is just. The injustices that have occurred against the Native Americans will not be left unpunished just as God's justice will come upon all injustices throughout world history. While it does not make sense why Native Americans way of life was removed for many from our perspective, I still trust God. God's Story of HIStory includes the Native Americans of the past, present, and future. God is at work! His plans and purposes will be completed and they will include Native Americans and people from every tribe and nation in His eternal Kingdom.
Example: Joseph, the great-great grandson of Abraham was made a slave in Egypt. God used that event to ultimately save Abraham's family (of which later would come Jesus.) But after Joseph the Israelites became slaves of the Egyptians and lived there over 400 years. Later God delivered them and the nation of Israel went to their promised land and at God's set time, Jesus, the eternal deliverer and savior came.
I share this example because, while the Israelites were in slavery the story did not make sense from their perspective. The things that happened to Native Americans do not make sense from our perspective. Yet, God is at work, God will bring justice appropriately in His time and in His way, and God loves the Native American people just like He loves all people. He has a plan and a purpose for each group of people right to the individuals even when we can't see it or understand it from our limited perspective.

Week of SEPTEMBER 14-18 |
September 17-20 |
This week we are beginning a President's unit to review the US History from its beginning up to the Civil War. We will watch a video called "Portraits to American Presidents." The video begins by showing how the 13 eastern British colonies broke away from the British through the American Revolutionary War. The colonies became the United States of America with the Declaration of Independence and Constitution providing the framework for the new nation. This framework has proved to effectively unite the United States of America for over 240 years. By learning about the Presidents, we will discover how the US grew and changed throughout the years. This week we will cover the first 6 Presidents.
