SOCIAL STUDIES
Welcome to Mr. Eisenga's classroom
I am excited to be back in the classroom teaching Social Studies. 12 years ago Mrs. Eisenga and I arrived in Zuni and I taught 6 years in the ZCMS upper grades. For the past 6 years I have been working for the Zuni Church. Now I am doing some of both coming back to the school to teach Social Studies and continuing with the church. I am excited to be back in the classroom and get to know you better while teaching you Social Studies!
Week 3
Note from the Teacher: I have enjoyed teaching and grading your assignments these first couple weeks. Many of you are watching my teaching videos, learning and completing the assignments quite well. Learning is the goal. Others have gotten behind or not turned in your assignments. I want to remind everyone to watch the teaching videos on the website and then do the assignment it goes with. Read the questions carefully to answer what the question is asking for. Those following these tips are doing well.
Week 3 - As Monday is Labor Day, the introductory video of the week shares a Zuni phrase (ashe Ikwa:ni’kya), scripture (Proverbs 14:23), and part of the Bible story of Ruth that relates to the holiday of Labor Day. This week we are continuing with map skills. I saw good work on the first assignment using latitude and longitude. Keep that up this week in developing your map reading and interpreting skills! This is a great practical life skill for family vacations and understanding charts and data that could be presented to you throughout life. I look forward to beginning to work with some of you in person during week 4. |

Week 2
This week you are going to work on the "What's In the News" assignment. Answer the questions about the Presidential Election and the Coronavirus. Think and share your ideas.
This week we are also going to review Map Skills. Chances are you have learned about continents, oceans, hemispheres, latitude and longitude before. There are important things in Social Studies worth reviewing in these first weeks while starting the year virtually.

What's In the News!
This year we want to pay attention to the news and engage with it.
Pay attention to the news stories and you will have opportunities to share what's going on in the news with the class so that we can be aware of the current events and learn from it within our Social Studies of our world.
Page 3 of the Week 1 WS will be saved for next week.

Social Studies is an important topic where we learn about connections between land, culture, religion, economics, politics, geography, and history with a goal of applying the knowledge to better our present and future world. God calls us to love your neighbor as yourself and be caretakers of His world. Through social studies we can grow in our personal responsibility as part of community in our village, state, nation, and world. I know God has special plans for you all within HIS Story. I pray we will all grow in our understanding of God's World and our role in it to help build a better community, nation, and world.
Social Studies is part of God's grand story of HIStory The Story begins with God creating all things and a beautiful creation. The highlight of His creation was creating people to be in relationship with Him. He gave us power to be caretakers of His creation and build a healthy society reflecting His glory and goodness. People failed in their part. Our relationship with God was broken. The beautiful creation became broken and infected with death. People's relationships became twisted by selfishness, greed, power, and envy. Social interactions of people became broken and in need of repair. God had a plan of restoring his creation. We have a part to play in serving Him, taking care of the creation, and growing a healthy society where everyone takes care of each other and loves your neighbor as yourself. Social Studies reveals successes and failures throughout history. There is always HOPE that things can get better. We can each be part of making the world better. While the world continues at present with people making efforts of restoring, we continue to be plagued by greed, irresponsibility, and selfishness that prevents a perfect society. While we partner with God to be part of His better world in the present and the future. The fullness of the good society will be realized again when Jesus returns and makes all things new. Ultimately God intervened in History. Jesus is at the center of the timeline. His life, death and resurrection offers hope of all things being made new and the brokenness being destroyed. The good of God will defeat the evil. One day He will return and gather peoples from every nation, tribe, and ethnicity uniting us under Him as our King in a perfect kingdom with no more brokenness. Until then, Social Studies is important to forming us into responsible caretakers of the creation and building a healthy society. God wants to help us make a difference for good in the world in the midst of the brokenness that surrounds us. This is Your Story. This is Our Story. This is God's Story. |
